On July 23 and 24, 2026, the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) re-issued regulations regarding the limits for carrying cash foreign currency into and out of Nepal. Nepali and foreign nationals can carry up to USD 5,000 (or its equivalent) without a customs declaration; amounts exceeding this require mandatory declaration and certification.
The central bank further clarified that Indian Rupee (INR) notes of 200 and 500 denominations, issued after November 9, 2016, can be brought, taken, and exchanged by Nepali or Indian citizens up to INR 25,000 per person. The prohibition on older INR 500 and 1,000 banknotes remains. Additionally, Nepali citizens are not permitted to carry Indian Rupees to countries other than India or bring them into Nepal from other countries.
