Nepal's Invisible Superpower: 6,000 UN Peacekeepers Abroad, More Per Capita Than Any Nation

नेपालको अदृश्य महाशक्ति: ६,००० संयुक्त राष्ट्र शान्ति सेना, प्रति व्यक्ति विश्वकै सबैभन्दा बढी

Nepal consistently deploys more United Nations peacekeepers per capita than any other nation on earth. In 2026, Nepal has approximately 6,000 military and police personnel deployed in UN peace operations — in countries including Lebanon, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic, and elsewhere. In absolute numbers, Nepal ranks among the top three contributing nations globally.

This is an underreported dimension of Nepal's global role. For a country of 29 million, with an economy smaller than individual Indian states, Nepal has a disproportionate footprint in global security. The Nepal Army's peacekeeping operations generate approximately USD 55-60 million annually in UN reimbursements — a significant hard currency inflow.

The geopolitical implications are underappreciated domestically. Nepal's peacekeeping record gives it standing in global institutions that a small landlocked country would not otherwise have. It creates relationships with African and Middle Eastern governments. It gives Nepali military officers international training and exposure that shapes the institution's professionalism.

The RSP government has signalled it will expand peacekeeping commitments as a diplomatic tool — using Nepal's credibility as a neutral, professional peacekeeper to open bilateral relationships that pure economic diplomacy cannot.

Nepal Next covers Nepal's international footprint as part of its Leadership Intelligence and Policy Intelligence departments.
