Nepal announced on June 23, 2026, the cancellation of a global tender for the operation, maintenance, and technical support of the National Identity Card Management Information System (NIDMIS). The Prime Minister's office and the Council of Ministers will take direct oversight of the system going forward.

The decision means citizen identity data will be managed internally rather than through a private or foreign contractor. The government cited the need to ensure domestic control over sensitive citizen data as the basis for the change.

Separately, a cabinet decision from June 12, 2026, made public on June 19, had already approved capacity expansion of the national identity management system, suggesting the government has been actively reshaping the infrastructure around the national ID programme.
